Personal Identity theft to become a pandemic in Africa-Sam George predicts

Communications Minister, Samuel Nartey George is of the firm view that as Africa begins to digitize its services and e-government services, there will be a need for education for online presence.

He believes that there will be a rise in online fraud and personal identity theft, indicating that it will become a big pandemic.

Against this backdrop, the government of Ghana intends to train one million people in digital skills and coding to help address the issues that will arise as a result of digitization.

The Minister was speaking at the #AIActionSummit2025 in Paris when he made this known.

“One of the key things we are doing is building a workforce. We have our one million coders program we are talking about. In the space of four years, one of our targets is to at least at the very least, train a million people in digital skills using a decentralized model in each of our 260 districts. So you have people who are cyber professionals, data analysts, data scientists, and people who are data protection persons.

“One thing that Africa must wake up to is that as we begin to digitize our services, our e-government services; we don’t have a lot of education for online presence. Online fraud and personal identity theft is going to become a big pandemic on the African continent. So we need to begin to prepare for that as we push our services online, we push our people online, we need to begin to put in place the engagement and the safeguards to ensure that the African people are not susceptible to identity theft,” he said.
