Gold Board Committee with over 20 people just job for the boys—Assafuah

Member of Parliament for Old Tafo in the Ashanti Region, Ekow Vincent Assafuah, has described the technical committee in charge of drafting the legal framework for the Ghana Gold Board as a Job for the boys.

The finance minister on January 27, 2025, inaugurated a technical committee to draft a framework for the formation of a Ghana Gold Board to fulfil a promise by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) during the 2024 election.

The team made up of 22 persons is chaired by the Managing Director for the PMMC, Sammy Gyamfi and has other astute professionals.

But speaking on Accra-based United Television Ekow Vincent Assafuah, Esq, said, “You don’t need 22 for this committee. When I was at the Ministry of Education, such committees were made up of let’s say 2 people from the AG’s office, two people from the Ministry, and maybe the Deputy Education Minister so that they meet to deliberate on it.

Is it because H.E John Dramani Mahama promised a lean government and the practicability of its implementation is difficult, so he has to find jobs for the boys? I don’t see why you need 22 people to bring out a bill of this nature,” he questioned.

He, however, supported the decision to have one body (Gold Board) that will deal with the sale of the country’s gold, considering the current state where several entities have the mandate to buy and sell.
