President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has indicated that efforts are underway to provide food for the various senior high schools across the country.
Prior to the reopening of senior high schools, CHASS, in a statement, called for the date to be postponed to afford the government time to deal with challenges with food.
The ParentsTeachers Association (PTA) also suggested that parents must be made to pay for the feeding of their children and urged parents to provide their wards with food when they are going back to school.
But speaking at the National Prayer and Thanksgiving Service, President John Dramani Mahama indicated that he has asked the Chief of Staff to work with the Ghana Education Service on order to provide students with food.
He disclosed that the outgone government imported some food items following the drought experienced in Ghana last year and as a result of the emergency, some of the food should be distributed to the various senior high schools across the country.
“As we speak, we have a challenge with feeding children in secondary school as the Ghana Education Service insisted that schools must reopen on the 3rd of January contrary to the advice of the conference of heads of assisted secondary schools.
As a stop-gap measure, I’ve asked the Chief of Staff to work with the Ghana Education Service to allocate and evacuate food that is currently held in warehouses in Tema. This food was imported by the outgone government in response to the drought that occurred last year but in this emergency we need to use some of the food to feed our students so that education can continue.
