Edo governor swears in 3 new judges Obaseki failed to inaugurate

Three out of eight judges cleared by the National Judicial Council have been sworn in by the governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo.

Recall that the former governor of the state, Godwin Obaseki has declined swearing the judges after they had been cleared by the NJC.

Only five of the judges were sworn in by Obaseki during his tenure.

However, in a swift move on Monday, Okpebholo said the judges’ swearing-in is in fulfillment of his promise during his inaugural speech upon assuming office as the governor of Edo State.

The three judges sworn in are Ojo Maureen Osa, Okundamiya Godwin Jeff and Edoghogho Eboigbe.

Okpebholo said, “I had promised to look into the case and today presents the privilege to right the wrong.

“Eleven months after the recommendation of the National Judicial Council (NJC), only five of those recommended were sworn-in as judges by the immediate past administration, leaving out three, even when they had all been cleared and recommended by the same NJC,” Okpebholo said.

He also added that nobody should be marginalized or hated for personal or political reason.
