“Prices of food extremely unbearable for the masses”

Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, has expressed concern over the rising cost of food items, describing the situation as “worrisome and unbearable” for many Nigerians.

In an interview on Saturday, the APC chieftain lamented the struggles faced by households in affording basic nutritional meals and called for immediate government action to address the crisis.

He noted that despite measures like the federal government’s food waiver policy and interventions by the Central Bank of Nigeria, food prices remain prohibitively high.

Oyintiloye attributed part of the problem to exchange rate fluctuations, which have further increased the cost of imported food items.

“The situation on the prices of food is becoming worrisome and extremely unbearable for the masses. Many households can no longer afford nutritional meals, while many are begging for survival,” he said.

Oyintiloye urged the federal and state governments to take decisive steps to curb food price hikes.

He urged the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission to continue to protect the interests of consumers.

“The federal government and states should set up food markets for people to buy basic food items at subsidized rates to cushion the challenge, at least for this festive season,” he said.

He cautioned that if underlying factors driving food inflation are not addressed, the situation may deteriorate further.
