You needed the mighty Minority to pass your ministers – Afenyo-Markin jabs Majority

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has taken a swipe at the Majority side for struggling to rally their members in Parliament, highlighting their inconsistent numbers during key government business.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, he pointed out the irony of the Majority’s past reliance on the Minority to pass ministerial nominees.

“I was in the lift with some members of his side, and they were in a hurry because their Chief Whip was forcing them into the chamber. For the first time, he is all over the place. He is now seeing how hard it is to do government business,” Afenyo-Markin remarked.

He challenged the claim that no government business could warrant the whipping of Majority MPs, reminding them of their struggles during previous approvals.

“Whenever there is government business, we will see his numbers in the chamber. Let me remind him—when you were first approving nominees, you were not even up to the required number. You needed our side to add to your numbers,” he stated.

Afenyo-Markin did not hold back in emphasizing the role of the Minority in ensuring the smooth passage of government business. “The second batch of approvals—you were not even up to the needed number.

On all four occasions, you needed the Minority, the mighty Minority, to make you pass your ministers,” he added.

He went on to mock the Majority’s self-proclaimed status. “They can call themselves super Majority or super Minority, but look at these empty seats in the chamber. The so-called super Majority is not even up to fifty.”

Calling on the Speaker to rule on an outstanding application, Afenyo-Markin stressed the need for the Majority to manage their members better.

“This House must stand firm and rule upon this application. The application has not been withdrawn—rule on it so that next time they will know how to whip their members in,” he asserted.
