Lawyer Evans Amankwa has alleged that Ghana has suffered significant financial losses due to corruption under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, calling for urgent measures to reclaim stolen state resources.
He emphasized that the level of wealth accumulation among certain government officials was alarming and unacceptable in an interview on Metro TV monitored by MyNewsGH.
“The state has been robbed seriously,” he declared. “The opulence alone was too much. Some people who were nowhere within a short time started building mansions, riding in expensive cars that they could not ordinarily afford.”
Amankwa pointed to incidents where individuals close to power were seen flaunting large sums of money and acquiring multimillion-dollar properties.
He recalled reports of a government official allegedly keeping over a million dollars in cash at home, calling it an unprecedented occurrence in Ghana’s political history.
When pressed to soften his claims, he maintained his stance, insisting that the evidence was too glaring to ignore. “I’ve been magnanimous when I say ‘stolen.’
I could have said ‘robbed,’ but let’s go with stolen,” he remarked, arguing that the government must act decisively to retrieve state assets and restore public confidence.
He justified the establishment of the Office of the Special Prosecutor and the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO), stating that such institutions are essential for investigating and recovering looted state resources. “When you see something has been stolen in the full glare of everyone, you don’t need to wait. The people of Ghana expect action.”
