One person has been killed, and five others are in critical condition after gunmen ambushed a bus traveling from Bawku to Bolgatanga.
The attack, which occurred despite military escort, saw the assailants opening fire on the vehicle. However, the accompanying military officers swiftly intervened to prevent further casualties.
The injured victims have been rushed to the Upper East Regional Hospital in Bolgatanga for emergency medical care.
While the motive behind the assault remains unclear, it is believed to be linked to the ongoing chieftaincy conflict in Bawku.
This incident follows a recent attack in which gunmen dressed in military uniforms stormed a residence, killing a woman and her two children. The Bawku area had experienced relative calm for about two weeks before this resurgence of violence.
With this latest attack, the death toll from the conflict has now risen to 46 since its resurgence in October 2024.
The escalating tensions have heightened fear among residents, who are calling for enhanced security measures to curb further violence.
