Our football is down; trust is low – Kofi Adams calls for reform in GFA

Ghana’s new Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has wasted no time in setting the tone for his tenure, sending a strong message to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) on financial discipline and alignment with government policies.

Speaking on Luv FM after his swearing-in ceremony, Adams referenced President Akufo-Addo’s recent directive restricting foreign travels and eliminating first-class flights for government officials as part of cost-cutting measures. He stressed that the GFA must not operate outside this directive.

“Even yesterday at our swearing-in, what did His Excellency the President say? He said foreign travels are banned, and where necessary, they must be cleared with the Chief of Staff. Anyone cleared to travel should not fly first class—at best, business class,” he stated.

The minister emphasized that the President’s stance should serve as a guiding principle for all institutions, including the GFA.

“This should tell you that this is the mindset of the President, and every other person must develop the same mindset, including the GFA. The GFA cannot live in a different world when the President’s objectives and direction are clear.”

Amid growing concerns over the state of Ghanaian football, Adams acknowledged the existing disconnect between football management and its stakeholders. “Look, our sports—our football—is down. The trust level between management, fans, and followers is low.”

However, he expressed confidence that a dialogue with the GFA would lead to necessary adjustments. “We will sit with them to have that understanding, and I believe they will not kick against any such proposition.”
