Dr. Rashid Pelpuo, Ghana’s Minister-designate for Labour, Jobs, and Employment, has pledged to improve the working conditions of public sector employees, focusing on fair wages and enhanced productivity.
He outlined his commitment during his appearance before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Thursday, January 30.
Dr. Pelpuo emphasized the importance of offering equitable wages and proposed measures aimed at boosting worker productivity, ensuring that public sector employees are adequately compensated for their contributions.
He acknowledged the hard work and dedication of Ghanaian workers, noting that their efforts are critical to the nation’s economic growth.
During his statement, Dr. Pelpuo said, “I’m sure you are talking about fair payments for work done, and the need to reconcile the fact that you’re producing and may not be producing hard enough to earn what you are doing and how do we reconcile it. I think it’s a major area and I will be tackling it.”
He further assured the Committee that, if approved, he would prioritise addressing these concerns, noting the significant impact such policy changes could have on the country’s workforce. “
I know that the Ghanaian worker is very conscientious, very committed, very hardworking. But we need a kind of policy direction to help him produce more so that we can pay and know that we’re paying something worthwhile,” he concluded.
