Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo Markin will want to be remembered as the leader who gave his all.
In an interview with Accra-based Channel 1 Television, the Member of Parliament for Efutu admitted that there is pressure for him to deliver.
To him, he will sacrifice for the trust reposed in him by the political party he leads in Parliament.
Just like J.H Mensah, he hopes to offer competence and work hard to ensure that the voice of his political leaning is heard in national discourse and parliament.
“As for the pressure, it would come. I am 46, I will turn 47 this year. If I’m calculating correctly, I started this public service job before my 24th birthday. 2002 so if you take it away serving as Constituency Financial Secretary, becoming an Assemblyman, I’ve lost elections, I lost constituency chairmanship election, I won my primaries but I was denied the opportunity to contest the national elections in 2004.
Contested Assemblyman, presiding member. I’ve been part of all national elections since 2004, so I have a fair idea of where the Lord has brought me and I have a fair idea of the expectations of the party. Like I said initially, this is a party of equals so you can never have absolute power. You should always be persuasive, rally the various interests.
When I was being considered for leadership, there was this argument Central Region had only four seats, Ashanti brought some 39, 40 seats, Eastern Region brought some 20-something seats and all that. When the elders were having all the arguments they said look J.H. Mensah was their leader in 97. JH Mensah was not from a region with the highest number of seats but J.H Mensah brought competence, hard work to the table. I want to be remembered as the leader who gave his all for his party,” he told Bernard Avle.
