If I become minister, child marriage will be a priority – Donatus Atanga

The Upper East Regional Minister-Designate, Donatus Akamugri Atanga, has vowed to lead a strong campaign against the ongoing issue of child marriages in the region.

In his recent appearance before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on January 27, he highlighted the importance of collaboration among various stakeholders to end this harmful practice.

“The fight against child marriage requires a collective effort, and I am committed to working with all stakeholders to bring this practice to an end,” Mr. Atanga stated, expressing his firm commitment to addressing the issue head-on.

If confirmed as the regional minister, he plans to initiate community sensitization programs, focusing on educating people about the legal and ethical consequences of marrying individuals under the age of 18.

“If I become the regional minister, I will have community sensitization on why it’s not right for them and constitutionally wrong for anybody to marry somebody under the age of 18 years,” he added.

Child marriage remains a prevalent issue in many regions, and the Upper East is no exception.

Through grassroots education and legal awareness, Atanga believes that the practice can be significantly reduced, creating a safer and more equitable environment for children, especially young girls, to grow and thrive.
