The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has raised awareness about an increase in respiratory infections caused by the human metapneumovirus (hMPV) in China and other parts of the Northern Hemisphere.
In a statement issued on Friday, January 17, 2025, the GHS said this trend has been observed since late December 2024.
The virus, which spreads through inhaling respiratory droplets, can infect people of all ages.
Symptoms and Preventive Measures
Common symptoms of hMPV include:
- Cough
- Fever
- Sore throat
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Body aches
- Headache
Severe symptoms may include:
- Persistent cough
- Difficulty or noisy breathing
- High fever
- Chest pain
- Fatigue
The GHS urged the public to follow these preventive measures:
- Cover your nose or mouth when sneezing or coughing.
- Wash your hands regularly with soap and water.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
- Wear a nose mask when needed.
- Visit a health facility if you notice symptoms.
