APC chieftain reveals why Obasa was impeached as Lagos House of Assembly Speaker

Joe Igbokwe, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has supported the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa, the former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

He described the decision, which occurred on Monday, as “long overdue.”

The 52-year-old former speaker was removed from office by Assembly members over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office.

Following his impeachment, Mojisola Meranda, representing Apapa 1 State Constituency, was appointed as the new Speaker of the Lagos Assembly.

In a post on his Facebook page, Igbokwe expressed his approval of the development.

“The deed is done in LAHA!!! Hon. Mudashiru Obasa impeached as Speaker Lagos State House of Assembly for gross misconduct and abuse of office. Hon Mojisola Meranda Ojora is the new Speaker.”

Elaborating further in the comment section of his post, Igbokwe highlighted long-standing tensions between Obasa and Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

He accused the former speaker of refusing to collaborate with the governor, which reportedly created friction within the administration.

“He (Obasa) was on Governor Sanwo-Olu’s neck for years. Every attempt to persuade him to work with the Governor fell on deaf ears. Many interventions by GAC (Governor’s Advisory Council) members did not help matters,” Igbokwe stated.

Obasa, who served as Speaker since 2015, was known for his political influence but also faced allegations of financial misconduct and abuse of power.

His impeachment marks the end of a tenure filled with controversy and strained relations with the executive arm of Lagos State.
