Political analyst urges new direction for NPP without Akufo-Addo leading the way

Political analyst Dr. Jonathan Asante Okyere has advised senior figures within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), including President Nana Akufo-Addo and former President John Agyekum Kufuor, to take a backseat as the party navigates its post-2024 election defeat.

Speaking in an interview on Starr FM, Dr. Asante Okyere pointed to low approval ratings and leadership shortcomings as key factors that necessitate a new direction for the party.

“They [Akufo-Addo and Kufuor] should rather stay behind. Maybe Dr. Bawumia did not have what it took to lead the party to win the elections,” he said.

His remarks come amid internal deliberations within the NPP on how to recover from the loss, which many analysts attribute to dwindling public confidence in the party’s leadership.

Dr. Asante Okyere referenced data from Global InfoAnalytics, highlighting President Akufo-Addo’s historically low approval ratings during the campaign period.

“The president had the lowest performance rate in approval rate,” he stated. “So you didn’t need such a person to lead in the front line of your campaign. As for the president, he is out.”

The analyst further suggested that the NPP could benefit from consulting experienced leaders like Akufo-Addo and Kufuor for strategic advice, but warned against their active involvement in any post-election review committee.

“The only thing they can do is to solicit some views from him [Akufo-Addo] as a committee member, not him becoming part of the committee,” he explained.
