Dr. Benjamin Bannor Bio, Director of Electoral Services at the Electoral Commission (EC), has dismissed claims of a Supreme Court petition affecting the re-collation of ballots in key constituencies.
Speaking to the media at the EC’s Greater Accra Regional Office, he sought to clarify the absence of National Democratic Congress (NDC) party agents and addressed concerns surrounding the re-collation process.
“I must tell you that we do not have any knowledge of such a petition,” Dr. Bio stated firmly when asked about reports of legal action potentially halting the re-collation.
His remarks were aimed at dispelling confusion about the EC’s operations following the Accra High Court ruling, which mandated the re-collation of votes for constituencies including Tema Central, Nsawam-Adoagyir, Ablekuma North, Ahafo Ano North, Techiman South, and Okaikwei Central.
The re-collation exercise, which is critical to finalizing the parliamentary results in these areas, has faced scrutiny, particularly from the NDC.
The party expressed dissatisfaction over what they claimed was limited involvement in the process.
However, Dr. Bio emphasized that the EC had adhered strictly to electoral regulations. “We have invited all the parties to bring their agents here. The regulations say that if an agent is not there, the exercise should continue,” he explained.
This development comes amid a politically charged atmosphere, with tensions running high over the disputed results in the affected constituencies.
The re-collation order was seen as a significant move to address grievances raised by political parties and their supporters. Yet, the absence of NDC agents during critical moments of the exercise has fueled speculation and public debate.
