It’s dangerous – Prof. Adei says of attacks on EC and judiciary

Ghanaian educationist Prof. Stephen Adei has expressed concern over the growing undermining of the Judiciary and the Electoral Commission (EC) in Ghana.

In an interview on TV3’s Hot Issues, Prof. Adei highlighted the persistent attacks on the Electoral Commissioner, Jean Mensah, by members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), describing it as deeply troubling.

“The two institutions are being undermined,” Prof. Adei stated. “From the very beginning, the NDC has attacked the Electoral Commissioner and some of his deputy commissioners without any provocation.

Even before they say a word, the attacks begin. For me, this is quite disturbing. At this point, so much is being done to undermine the judiciary as well.”

Prof. Adei also expressed concern over the politicization of the Electoral Commission, pointing out that its leadership has been periodically criticized based on the party in power.

He deemed this trend dangerous for the country’s democratic processes.

“Now, the EC faces periodic attacks depending on which party is in power. People are already calling for the removal of the Electoral Commissioner.

Are we now heading towards having an NDC-run EC or an NPP-appointed Electoral Commissioner?” he asked.
