HIV/AIDS: “Use protection this festive season”

As the holiday season approaches, the federal government through the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) has called on Nigerians to prioritize their health by knowing their HIV status and practising safe behaviours during the festive period.

In a statement signed by NACA’s Head of Public Relations and Protocol, Toyin Aderibigbe, on Sunday, the Director General of NACA, Dr Temitope Ilori, emphasized the importance of informed and responsible decisions during this time of heightened social activities.

“Christmas is a time for joy and celebration, but it is also an opportunity to secure your health and protect others,” Dr. Ilori stated.

She encouraged Nigerians to take advantage of free and confidential HIV testing services available nationwide, noting that early diagnosis ensures access to lifesaving treatment and a healthier, longer life.

“HIV remains a significant public health concern, but advancements in testing and treatment mean it is no longer a death sentence,” she added.

Dr. Ilori highlighted the importance of safe practices, particularly during increased social interactions.

“Use protection during sexual activities, and for those who choose abstinence, continue to uphold it as the safest option. Ignorance is no longer an excuse, as HIV testing and education are now widely accessible,” she said.

NACA reiterated its commitment to reducing the spread of HIV and achieving an AIDS-free Nigeria.

“This festive season, give yourself the gift of health by visiting the nearest health facility or community testing centre to know your HIV status. Let us work together for a healthier and happier Nigeria,” Dr. Ilori concluded.
