Most Rev. Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, the Catholic Bishop of Sunyani and President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference expressed deep gratitude and admiration for the National Elections Security Task Force (NESTF) for its role in ensuring peace and security during the 2024 General Elections.
“As a nation committed to democratic values and the peaceful exercise of political rights, the importance of ensuring the security of citizens, electoral officials, and the integrity of the electoral process cannot be overstated,” Bishop Gyamfi began, emphasizing the pivotal role security forces play in upholding the democratic framework of the country.
He went on to recognize the dedication and professionalism shown by the NESTF throughout the election period.
“The NESTF’s dedication and professional handling of security measures throughout this election period has been invaluable in maintaining peace and stability across the country,” he stated.
Acknowledging the critical contributions made by the Task Force, Bishop Gyamfi highlighted their proactive stance in managing security both before and during the elections.
“We acknowledge the tireless efforts of the Task Force in preparing for and overseeing security arrangements, mitigating potential threats, maintaining order at polling stations, and ensuring the safety of voters and election officials,” he said.
This approach, he noted, helped ensure the credibility of the elections by fostering an environment of safety for all participants.
Despite the commendable efforts, the Bishop was not blind to the challenges faced. “There were unfortunate pockets of vandalism and violence during and after the elections,” he acknowledged.
“But by facilitating a safe environment, you allowed Ghanaians to participate in the elections with confidence, free from fear or intimidation.” This, he stressed, was crucial for upholding the legitimacy of the electoral process.
Bishop Gyamfi also applauded the collaborative efforts of NESTF, particularly their teamwork with the Electoral Commission, political parties, civil society organizations, and the public.
“We applaud the collaborative spirit exhibited by the NESTF in working alongside other national stakeholders to uphold peace and foster mutual respect among all parties involved,” he said, highlighting the importance of unity in preserving peace during elections.
However, the Bishop also called for continued vigilance. “We urge the Ghana Police and other security services to remain vigilant and professional,” he urged.
“They must deal more decisively with all those involved in the mayhem, treating them as the criminals that they are, regardless of their party affiliations. Justice must be served!”
