Police move to investigate organisers over death of 32 children


The Oyo State Police Command has said that has launched an investigation into the death of nearly 32 children in a stampede at a Christmas fun fair in the state.

The fun fair sources said was allegedly organised by the former queen of the Ooni of Ife, Prophetess Naomi Shikemi, and an Ibadan-based broadcaster, Oriyomi Hamzat.

The police said it was already investigation the circumstances that led to the death of the children at the event on Wednesday, December 18.

Reports have said that the stampede of children happened following poor planning as provisions were made for 5,000 children but over 7,500 people turned up for the event.

The spokesperson for the Oyo state police command, Adewale Osifeso said updates would be provided to the public at the end of the investigation.

He said, “Investigation is in progress. Updates will be provided accordingly, please.”
