John Dramani Mahama, the newly declared President-Elect, faces his first constitutional duty under Ghana’s Presidential (Transition) Act, 2012 (Act 845).
Within 24 hours of the election results being announced, he must appoint individuals to critical positions in the Transition Team.
These appointments are designed to ensure a smooth transfer of power and uphold Ghana’s reputation as a model of democratic governance in Africa.
Key Appointments Under Act 845
According to Act 845, the President-Elect must designate individuals to occupy the following roles, which are pivotal to the transition process:
- Head of the Staff of Office of the President-Elect
This individual acts as the operational head of the President-Elect’s office, coordinating transition activities. - Member Responsible for Presidential Affairs
Ensures that issues concerning the President-Elect’s duties are adequately managed. - Member Responsible for Legal Affairs
Advises on legal matters relating to the transition, ensuring compliance with constitutional provisions. - Member Responsible for Finance
Oversees financial planning and budget alignment for the incoming administration. - Member Responsible for the Interior
Focuses on security and safety measures during the transitional period. - Member Responsible for Defence
Ensures national security and military oversight remain uninterrupted during the handover. - Member Responsible for Foreign Affairs
