We Pledge a Smooth Transition for Ghana – Bawumia to Mahama

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, delivered a poignant concession speech that resonated with grace, unity, and hope after his electoral defeat to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Dramani Mahama.

“While this result was not what we desired, I acknowledge that it is part of the democratic process,” Dr. Bawumia stated, setting the tone for his speech.

He explained that the campaign had been a spirited effort where his team presented policies and programs they truly believed could transform Ghana.

“We put our best foot forward, presenting policies and programs we believed in. However, it is evident that the voters had other ideas,” he admitted, reflecting the humility of a leader attuned to the will of the people.

Acknowledging the enormity of his rival’s victory, Dr. Bawumia revealed that he had personally called President-elect John Dramani Mahama to congratulate him and pledge his full support in ensuring a seamless transition.

“As committed Democrats, we pledge to ensure a very smooth transition so that the business of government continues seamlessly,” he affirmed, emphasizing the NPP’s resolve to uphold Ghana’s democratic legacy.

Dr. Bawumia reassured Ghanaians of the NPP’s role as a constructive opposition. “We will not be disruptive opposition,” he promised.

“Even though we would subject government actions and policies to strict scrutiny in the interest of our beloved nation, our aim will always be to safeguard the progress and prosperity of Ghana.”

Turning his focus to the NPP’s members and supporters, Dr. Bawumia addressed the pain of defeat but urged resilience.

“To the rank and file of the New Patriotic Party, I know the feeling hurts,” he acknowledged, recognizing the disappointment of those who had invested immense energy into the campaign.

“This is not the result you worked tirelessly for, and it is natural to feel disheartened. But I assure you, we will regroup and come back even stronger.”
