The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), with support from the World Bank, has lamented over the alarming levels of food insecurity in Nigeria through its General Household Survey-Panel Wave 5 (2023/2024) report.
The survey reveals that 20.8% of Nigerian households resorted to borrowing food or seeking help from friends and family over the past 30 days.
65.8% of households reported being unable to afford healthy, nutritious, or preferred meals due to financial constraints.
63.8% of households relied on a restricted variety of foods, while 62.4% of respondents expressed anxiety about running out of food.
Also, 60.5% admitted to eating less than they should because of food scarcity.
The findings also reflect the growing urgency for policies that address food affordability, enhance agricultural productivity, and strengthen social safety nets to mitigate hunger and insecurity across the nation.
