Minority leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin is of the view that the rise in the Cholera outbreak in his constituency is a result of the closure of public toilet facilities along the coast.
According to him, after the New Patriotic Party (NPP) lost power, some fanatics went to seize the keys to the public toilets and locked them up.
He says the fisher folks do not have access to toilet facilities, hence the rise in cholera in Efutu.
To him, until the public toilet facilities are open, there will be
“He again talks about the sudden rise since January of the situation in Winneba. Mr Speaker it is so because sometimes you know when there is a change in power, the way our locals react. All public toilets in Efutu at the Nshorna has been seized and locked, and you, the minister, fortunately, went to Winneba and met the fisher folks at the Nshorna, and that is where the problem is. So they have no place to ease themselves, and it is a problem. Given the history of this situation and we know how people contract it.
If a party comes into government and somebody thinks let me go and lock up the toilet when there is a cholera outbreak, it doesn’t look at party colours. Whether you are CPP, NPP, NDC so I believe that this is a matter that has to be looked at critically, and upon that, we will be able to contain it,” he said.
He used the opportunity to urge the Health Minister to ensure that Efutu, which has recorded 18 cases and is the highest in the Central Region, gets vaccinated.
“In terms of vaccination, he said they are yet to get approval for Efutu I felt that that should rather be prioritized. If Agona West is recording just 6 and we have 18 in Efutu and you are rather vaccinating in Agona West, you may have to look at it instead of saying you are now seeking approval for Efutu,” he said.
