OSP must be cautious with labels – Dr. Stephen Amoah on Ofori-Atta controversy

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has come under scrutiny following its decision to classify former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta as a fugitive.

Weighing in on the issue, Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso and former Deputy Minister of Trade, Dr. Stephen Amoah, has urged caution in making such declarations.

“For the OSP to declare the former Finance Minister a fugitive is something I simply do not understand,” Dr. Amoah stated during an interview on Joy News. “Whether or not they have the legal authority to make such a declaration is unclear.”

His comments reflect growing concerns over the handling of corruption investigations, particularly in cases involving high-profile politicians.

While the OSP has been tasked with ensuring accountability in public office, its latest move has sparked legal and political debates.

Dr. Amoah further questioned the basis of the claim. “From my perspective, a fugitive is someone who is attempting to escape custody, and I wonder whether Ofori-Atta is even in custody,” he said.

As discussions continue, the MP emphasized the importance of due process and legal integrity in governance. “As a country, we need to be careful with such declarations. It is crucial that we reflect on the legal processes and ensure that actions are taken with full regard for the law.”
