OSP’s noise on Ken Ofori-Atta will amount to nothing—General Mosquito

Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Asiedu Nketia, is of the view that the decision to declare Ken Ofori Atta wanted and a fugitive, among others, is just noise-making, which will not stand the test of time.

To the man known popularly as General Mosquito, if the Attorney General and Minister for Justice do not show interest in following the issues to the latter, it may become a nine-day wonder.

He was speaking on Accra-based Radio Gold when he made this position known.

“I have been very consistent that the OSP won’t be beneficial to us as a country. You see that they are making noise, but with time it will just die out because the OSP will hit a snag. If the Attorney General does not take interest in the case and pursue it, it will just turn out to be one of those cases,” he said.

To him, if the country is serious about fighting corruption, there will be a need for the Attorney General to be a separate office with prosecutor powers to arrest and prosecute people involved in corruption-related offenses.

“What I suggest is that we should separate the Attorney General’s Office from the office of the Minister of Justice so that we look for a career Attorney General so that he can prosecute. So if you’re in government and you go against the law, you can be prosecuted; if you’re in opposition and you go contrary to the law, you will be arrested. This will mean he has the authority to do it,” he said.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor has declared Ghana’s former Finance Minister wanted and a fugitive.

The decision to declare him a fugitive is because he failed to appear before the OSP when he was summoned.

Lawyers of the former Finance Minister wrote a letter to the OSP indicating that their client is out of the country for medical attention and cannot appear before them.

However, that did not sit well with the OSP who has therefore declared the former Finance Minister a fugitive.
