I couldn’t in good conscience continue – Attorney General defends dropping high-profile cases

Legal battles are often seen as a fight for justice, but behind the scenes, there are ethical dilemmas that many don’t see. Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has defended his controversial decision to drop several high-profile cases, citing legal flaws and professional integrity.

Addressing journalists on Wednesday, February 12, Dr. Ayine explained that his decision was not politically motivated but based on legal and ethical concerns. “For ethical and professional reasons, I couldn’t in good conscience continue to prosecute some of the cases,” he stated.

Beyond ethics, he pointed out that some of the charges were fundamentally flawed. “Some of the cases, in my own review and analysis of the charges, showed clearly that the charges were defective and some were far against the promptness of plain commonsense.”

His decision has sparked mixed reactions, especially among critics who believe justice should take its full course. However, Dr. Ayine stood firm, emphasizing that some of the cases lacked sufficient evidence. “In some of the cases, the evidence led so far showed that there was a reasonable doubt, as to the guilt of the accused persons and no prosecutor should continue to pursue a case in the face of overwhelming doubt regarding the guilt of accused persons.”

He also expressed concerns about the judiciary’s handling of some cases, hinting at deeper systemic issues. “In most of the cases I had terminated proceedings, the conduct of some of the individual judges left so much to be desired.”
