Why Mahama established ORAL initiative

Felix Ofosu Kwakye has revealed why President John Dramani Mahama established the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) team. According to him, the president was overwhelmed with corruption complaints following his election victory, prompting him to take action.

“The President was inundated with corruption reports,” Ofosu Kwakye said on The Point of View on Channel One TV monitored by MyNewsGH. “Right after the election, President Mahama himself was overwhelmed with complaints and allegations.”

He explained the purpose of ORAL, saying, “So he said, ‘Look, let me set up a system that we can use to receive these complaints, process them somewhat, so that when we take over power, we are then able to hand it over to the appropriate quarters to look into.’”

According to him, ORAL received thousands of reports. “Over 2,400 complaints were received. Over 1,400 phone calls came in, and over 900 emails were sent, containing all manner of information,” he disclosed.

The government spokesperson assured that action would follow. “The report was presented to the President today, who then immediately handed it over to the Attorney General to look into,” he said.

He also hinted at swift legal steps, stating, “I can assure you, in the next few days, very major action is going to be taken on some of those cases. Some are so straightforward, the evidence is so compelling, that one needs to act on it very quickly.”

On the government’s approach, he clarified, “The Attorney General has a dual approach. The emphasis is on recovery—if you can recover whatever has been stolen, that would be the first priority. Then, after recovery, or even before that, there are those whose crimes are serious enough to warrant prosecution.”

He stressed that accountability is key. “Ultimately, this is to send a signal that you cannot act with impunity. Once you take public office, you cannot abuse it to enrich yourself and think you can get away with it.”
