Not all marriages are the same – Dr. Olumide on the three types of marriages

According to life coach Dr. Olumide Emmanuel, understanding the kind of marriage one has is the first step to navigating it successfully.

He explained that there are three types of marriages today, each with its own structure and consequences, during an interview on the ‘Your View’ show on TVC, monitored by MyNewsGh.

He described traditional marriages as the kind our parents experienced, where the man was the unquestioned head of the household and the woman’s place was confined to the kitchen.

In such marriages, children scrambled when their father came home, and expressions of affection were rare.

The husband could not openly say “I love you” to his wife or hug his children, as such displays were considered unnecessary. While this structure had its advantages, it also came with limitations.

Then came contemporary marriages, where both partners are educated and aware of their rights. Here, equality is emphasized, and no one wants to be talked down to.

The idea of women’s liberation is prominent, and partners fiercely protect their independence, often leading to financial and emotional separation. This shift has come with its own set of challenges, as power struggles become common.

Finally, he spoke about kingdom marriages, which he described as unions based on divine principles.

These marriages, he believes, operate with a sense of partnership and shared responsibility, rather than one person asserting dominance over the other.

He emphasized that the type of marriage one chooses ultimately shapes how issues like finances, responsibilities, and decision-making are handled.
