It is not normally done – Austin Gamey opposes Akufo-Addo’s late appointments

Labour Consultant Austin Gamey has voiced his disapproval of former President Nana Akufo-Addo’s decision to appoint and recruit individuals into state institutions after the December 7, 2024, general elections.

According to him, such actions contradict standard governance and economic principles, particularly when a government is on its way out.

Speaking in an interview with TV3 on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, Gamey explained why post-election recruitments are generally avoided in responsible governance.

“When you have elections, you don’t recruit immediately after the elections. Your outgoing government—except that it is taking power from itself—then recruitment of any shape and form can take place. Even that, it does not make economic sense.

That’s why you have manpower ceiling, you don’t go over the manpower ceiling,” he stated.

His remarks come amid growing concerns over the previous government’s last-minute appointments, a move critics say places unnecessary pressure on the incoming administration.

Gamey argues that such decisions can create unnecessary complications for the new government, which may not align with the individuals appointed.

“It is not normally done,” he asserted, emphasizing that post-election appointments often serve the interests of the outgoing government rather than the nation as a whole.
