The role of prosecution in a democratic society is to uphold justice, but according to private legal practitioner and NPA CEO, Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, it becomes dangerous when wielded as a political weapon.
Speaking on TV3’s The Key Points, Tameklo expressed concern over how the prosecution has been used against political opponents in Ghana, citing the case of Dr. Johnson Asiama, the former Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) who has now been nominated as Governor.
“Prosecution is a powerful tool, but the most dangerous thing you can ever have is when a president decides to weaponise prosecution to deal with political opponents,” he stated.
He further revealed that the Attorney-General’s department, under Godfred Dame, had already considered dropping charges against Dr Asiama before the case was formally discontinued.
“Even before the A-G filed this process, there were already memos and conversations within the A-G’s department to discontinue the case,” he disclosed.
