Boxing Coach Vincent Akai Nettey has confidence that Ghana Boxing is not in a miserable condition as some people perceive because it has been long since the country got a male world champion and the fact that Ghana missed Paris 2024 after getting bronze at Tokyo 2020.

Speaking in an exclusive interview on Omashi TV last Friday, he noted that Ghana Boxing in general is moving forward and if the nation wants a world champion, then more investment must be pushed into the game.

He said Ghana missed the 2024 Paris Olympic Games due to many factors especially on the boxers who were not willing to die for their nation, lack of residential camping and poor motivation for boxers.

According to him, if the government and Ministry of Sports and Recreation satisfy some of the needs for amateur boxing they can perform better and bring home glory.

“Other countries in Asia and Arab lands are investing in sports so it looks like they have overtaken us but we also have to invest because we have the talent and skills, but talent needs to be managed well scientifically” he expressed.

Coach Akai Nettey who manages Attoh Quarshie Boxing Club at James Town in Accra is an international two stars graded trainer.

He is currently Deputy National Boxing Coach of Ghana and has the experience and exposure of participating in several championships such as Olympic Games in London 2012 Rio 2016 and Paris 2024.

He has been to the World Boxing Championship, African and some Invitational tournaments on both amateur and professional levels.

He said boxers with the positive mindset to succeed are the ones who make it and urged boxers to train regularly to be in good condition always.

He advised that discipline and service to humanity is essential as he has gone through the ranks and sacrificed so much to be selected into the National team in 2009, and had even experienced the Commonwealth Youth Games in Barbados.

He appealed to corporate institutions  to come to the aid of Ghana Boxing and his club

He revealed being introduced to boxing by a friend, Ablorh Sowah, one of Ghana’s best talents and he gained much boxing knowledge from good old Teddy Lamptey.

He named Ambassador Ray Quarcoo, former President of the Ghana Boxing Federation as s marvelous inspiration as well as Black Bombers head Coach Dr. Ofori Asare.

Coach Akai Nettey thanked former President Nana Akufo Addo for awarding the team that won bronze at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, which he is very grateful.

He hailed female boxer Abigail Quartey for winning the WIBF title and wished the Black Hitters success as they prepare for the 2025 IBA Women’s Championship in Nis, Serbia.

Coach Nettey was accompanied to the Omashi Media Studios by another hard working trainer, Coach Frank Addo who works with the Wisdom Boxing Club.
