Ghanaian boxing fans in UK not happy with Soldier Boxer’s performance, demands change in leadership of GBA
Many Ghanaians in the United Kingdom who watched the Commonwealth title clash between Callum Simpson and Elvis Ahorgah aka Soldier Boxer on 1st February are not happy with his performance.
They are questioning whether he is the best boxer in the Super Middleweight division in Ghana who can represent the nation and compete for the prestigious Commonwealth title.
According to boxing enthusiasm, Bill Sakyi – Ofei, he was not happy for the defeat, because he knows Ghana has very good, credible and classic boxers who can box, entertain and win.
He recalled great boxers like Prof. Azumah Nelson, Ike Bazooka Quartey, Joshua Hitter Clottey Raymond Narh, Isaac Dogboe and others who can give fans much to cheer about.
According to Ofei, it seems things are not going well and in the right direction for Ghana Boxing and appealed to the GBA to check boxers who represented the nation in big fight and platforms.
“Although Elvis Ahorgah looked confident and composed before the fight and was talking big at the weigh in and press conference. he was technically bankrupt and locked so many things in Boxing as he threw wide punches in the air and not hitting target” he said.
Meanwhile, there is a return match clause in the contract and Soldier may have another opportunity to crack at the title again in June or July.
Sakyi – Ofei. called on the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) to establish an effective rating system to know the best boxers.
He also appealed to boxing coaches to train boxers well with modern scientific methods.
The member of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) noted that boxers are ambassadors so they should serve and sell the nation’s sports well, because boxing is one sport that Ghanaians are respected for.
Many followers of Ghana Boxing are of the views and opinions that the game is down as compared to the past due to poor unguided leadership.
This has led to many personalities seeking to come on board to direct the GBA. Some of these personalities are Ivan Bruce Cudjoe of Cabic Promotions, Alex Ntiamoah Boakye of Box Office Promotions, Emmanuel Addo a former boxer Rabon Dodoo the current first vice president and Roger Barnor the second vice president.
Others interested in the President position are Nii Adama Addy aka Nii Gonti CEO of Omashi Media and Dr. Henry Manly-Spain a former first vice president.
