In Ghana’s often polarizing political space, where fiery debates and party loyalty dominate, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin is making a case for something different—friendship, mutual respect, and honesty.
Speaking with Bernard Avle on Channel One TV, monitored by MyNewsGh, he addressed various topics but placed particular emphasis on his relationship with Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson and the importance of transparency in governance.
Contrary to the common perception that political opponents remain adversaries beyond the parliamentary floor, Afenyo-Markin revealed that his connection with Ato Forson extends far beyond politics. “
I frequently visit Ato’s residence to spend quality time together, and the same is reciprocated,” he disclosed.
The Minority Leader went further to stress the need for civility in Ghana’s political discourse. While ideological battles are inevitable, he believes they should be conducted with decorum and respect.
“We must be aware of our objectives and maintain transparency regarding them,” he asserted. His comment underscores a growing concern in the country—politicians often appear more focused on partisan battles than serving the people.
Afenyo-Markin, however, suggests that trust can only be built when politicians are honest about their intentions and maintain a sense of integrity.
Referencing his own interactions with Bernard Avle, he noted that their friendly relationship does not prevent him from engaging critically on national issues.
“Even though I have a good relationship with you Bernard, you discuss my issues with impartiality on your platform when they arise and that is how it should be,” he explained.
At a time when many Ghanaians have become increasingly disillusioned with political leadership, Afenyo-Markin believes that restoring public trust requires a commitment to truth.
“Both the NDC and the NPP should prioritize honesty in their endeavors to regain the trust of the populace,” he urged.
