A leading voice in the fight against galamsey, Erastus Asare Donkor, has revealed that some elements in the new government have sanctioned three groups to mine in the Tano Anwia forest reserve.
He is of the view that impunity must not be allowed since there is a change of government.
Making this known in a post shared via social media, Erastus Asare Donkor said “As we speak, three groups sanctioned by elements in the new government are still inside the Tano Anwia forest reserve mining illegally further degrading the forest.
This impunity must not be allowed to fester!!
This pic was taken this morning”.
Issues of galamsey came to the spotlight during the 2024 elections and contributed immensely to the defeat of the New Patriotic Party.
Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, during his final state of the nations address, indicated that his fight against galamsey cost his parliamentary candidates in areas where mining take place their seats.
The then-opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) took advantage of the conversations around the issue and the anger of Ghanaians to ensure that persons in the NPP government engaged in the menace were exposed.
They condemned the mining activities and pledged that they will ensure that they fight against illegal mining.
The then-opposition met with UTAG to sign a pact that in three months in office they will halt illegal mining activities in the country.
It therefore comes as a shock that after a few weeks in office, some elements of the government that blamed the previous government for illegal mining are engaged in the same things Ghanaians voted against.
