Kanayo O. Kanayo laments gender bias in Nollywood’s support system

Veteran actor Kanayo O. Kanayo has shed light on pressing issues in Nollywood, from gender dynamics to the prevalence of sexual harassment, in a conversation on the Honest Brunch podcast monitored by MyNewsGh.

Addressing claims of gender favouritism, Kanayo stated, “Rich Nigerian men often lavish support on actresses, making it seem like they work harder than their male counterparts. This imbalance gives the false impression that men in the industry aren’t doing enough.”

He also discussed the exploitation of aspiring actors, particularly women, by unscrupulous producers. “Many are asked for gifts, like an iPhone 15 or even rent payments, just to secure roles. It’s a cycle driven by desperation,” Kanayo revealed.

When asked about combating sexual harassment, he was realistic but firm. “It cannot be eradicated, but it can be curtailed through sanctions. If a producer is caught, they should face strict consequences.”

Kanayo called for aspiring actors to focus on honing their craft rather than resorting to desperate measures.
