The 2024 Boxing Ghana Awards honored the passion and excellence of Ghanaian boxing, leaving a lasting impression on boxingdom.
Lifetime achievement awards were presented to Lawyer Peter Zwennes, David Kotey (D.K. Poison), Dr. Ofori Asare, and Alex Ntiamoah-Boakye, recognizing their pivotal contributions to the growth of boxing in Ghana and beyond.
Boxing Ghana has emerged as a key platform for preserving and promoting the sport’s rich heritage on both national and global levels. This year’s event highlighted the remarkable talent and dedication shaping the future of boxing.
The Lifetime Achievement Awards acknowledge individuals whose efforts have greatly advanced boxing in Ghana and around the world, celebrating their commitment, passion, and enduring legacy.
These awards serve as a tribute to their role in inspiring future generations and enhancing boxing as a source of national and international pride.
Lawyer Peter Zwennes, former president of the Ghana Boxing Authority, spearheaded several initiatives that increased the visibility of boxing in Ghana. He ran for the presidency of the Ghana Bar Association in the 2018 elections.
David Kotey, popularly known as D.K. Poison, became Ghana’s first world champion by winning the featherweight title in 1975 and boasts an impressive professional record. His first professional bout was on 5 February 1966 in Accra when he outpointed his opponent over six rounds.
He became the national featherweight champion that year. His last professional bout was in 1989 when he lost an African lightweight title fight. He won 49 fights with 31 knockouts having 8 defeats and 3 draws in his professional boxing record.
Dr. Ofori Asare, technical director of the Ghana Boxing Federation and head trainer of the national boxing team, made history at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, guiding Samuel Takyi to win bronze—the only African medalist in boxing that year. He serves as a member of the technical committee of the International Boxing Association. He is a founder and manager of Wisdom Boxing Gym in Accra.
Alex Ntiamoah-Boakye, CEO of Box Office Promotions, has been instrumental in organizing annual events like the Homowo Boxing Championship and played a key role in drafting the Ghana Boxing Authority’s constitution.
The contributions of these distinguished individuals have been instrumental in elevating Ghanaian boxing to greater heights.
Sammy Ofosuhene, CEO and Managing Chief Editor of Boxing Ghana, expressed his gratitude to voters and called on businesses and individuals to support the sport’s continued growth.
