Shehu Sani lists 5 factors that could lead to a Speaker’s impeachment


On Monday, January 13, speaker, Mudashiru Obasa was impeached by the  lawmakers of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

Mojisola Meranda, the deputy Speaker immediately replaced Obasa as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

However, following the impeachment, Shehu Sani, a former lawmaker who represented the Kaduna Central at the Nigerian Senate listed some factors that could lead to the impeachment of a speaker in Nigeria.

Sani, in a post made on X said, his experiences from 1999 shows that there are five factors that could lead to the impeachment of a speaker.

1. When there is a strong suspicion that the Speaker is plotting impeachment.

2. When the Speaker is becoming too independent and resist taking orders from the governor.

3. When the Speaker is not “taking good care” of members and leaving them “hungry”.

4. When the Speaker is deliberately delaying or obstructing the passage of governor’s interested bills

5. When the Speaker is strongly accused of colluding with enemies of the governor.
