Arrogance led to loss, not voter apathy

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Legal Team, Lawyer Twum Barimah, has declared that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) faces a long road back to power, needing to “fight through three elections” before they can hope to close the 1.8 million vote gap from their recent defeat.

Speaking on the Ghana Se Sen Morning Show on Lawson TV/Radio, Barimah dismissed claims of voter apathy as the reason for the NPP’s loss.

“Voter apathy is just an excuse,” he said. “Look at the Ashanti Region—traditionally their stronghold—turnout was still around 60% to 80%. The NPP’s defeat was not about voter apathy. It was about arrogance and a failure to listen to the people.”

Barimah emphasized that the NPP must reflect on their defeat and adopt humility. “This loss is a lesson for them,” he added. “You don’t take the electorate for granted and expect to win.”

The Electoral Commission (EC) officially declared the results of the 2024 presidential election on January 10, 2025.

John Dramani Mahama, the NDC candidate, secured a resounding victory with 6,591,790 votes, representing 56.42% of the total votes cast. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP candidate, garnered 4,877,611 votes, which accounted for 41.75%.

Barimah concluded by urging the NPP to focus on rebuilding and addressing internal issues rather than assigning blame.

“If they can learn from this defeat, maybe they’ll have a chance, but it’s going to take them at least three election cycles to bridge this gap. The people have spoken loudly and clearly.”
