Kingmakers oppose Makinde’s appointment of Owoade as new Alaafin of Oyo


Oyo kingmakers have opposed the approval of Prince Abimbola Owoade by Governor Seyi Makinde.

Recall that Makinde had approved the appointment with nt of Owoade on Friday, January 10.

However, rattled by the governor’s decision, the kingmakers of the ancient Oyomesi Kingdom said the approval was unlawful and illegal.

In a letter addressed to the governor, the declared the appointment of the new Alaafin of Oyo as null and void.

Naming Prince Luqman Gbadegesin as the bonafide person who should become the next Alaafin, the kingmakers said at no point did they recommend Owoade to the state government for appointment.

The letter read in part, “You will recall that on 30th September, 2022 at the meeting of the Kingmakers in accordance with the Alaafin of Oyo Chieftaincy Declaration, 1961, the Kingmakers appointed Prince Lukman Adelodun Gbadegesin as the Alaafin of Oyo by majority of the lawful votes of the Kingmakers.”

According to the letter Gbadegesin obtained the majority of votes of the Kingmakers present was deemed appointed.

They said Gbadegesin’s name was sent to the governor for approval but he went ahead to name someone else and the next Alaafin.
