A vice president of the policy think tank IMANI Africa, Kofi Betil has described E-Levy as the most hated tax he has ever come across.
The E-Levy is a Levy on all electronic transfers of money apart from those excluded by law.
The Electronic Transfer Levy Act, 2022 (Act 1075) and Electronic Transfer Levy (Amendment) Act 2022 (ACT 1089) impose a levy of 1% on electronic transfers. The Levy is charged to the transferor at the time of transfer. The Levy is charged by the entities listed in the First Schedule to the Act.
This tax since its introduction by the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government, has been met with contempt, with several Ghanaians kicking against its introduction.
The tax played a key role in the 2024 election that saw two of the major political parties promising to scrap it.
Addressing this issue, Kofi Bentil indicated that the tax is the most hated in the country and with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) winning the 2024 elections, he hopes to see if they will stand by their word by scrapping the levy.
His post shared via social media read “E-Levy is the most hated tax I’ve ever seen!! All candidates pledged to abolish them. We live to see who stands by their word!!”.
