On January 7, 2025, Ghana made history as Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang was sworn in as the country’s first female vice president.
The momentous occasion was not only a personal triumph for Opoku-Agyemang but also a defining moment in the country’s journey toward gender equality.
Following her inauguration, the NDC Professionals Women, a prominent women’s advocacy group, wasted no time in celebrating Opoku-Agyemang’s achievement.
In a statement released shortly after her swearing-in, the group expressed their admiration and hopes for the future.
“Your achievement is a beacon of hope and progress for women across the nation, affirming that leadership has no gender barriers,” the statement read.
“It reflects your steadfast dedication to serving Ghana with integrity, compassion, and a vision for inclusive growth.”
The NDC Professionals Women highlighted the transformative impact of policies that Opoku-Agyemang has championed in the past.
These included the establishment of the Women’s Development Bank and initiatives aimed at improving the well-being of young girls, such as providing free sanitary pads to school girls.
“These initiatives signify a commitment to empowering women economically and ensuring the dignity and well-being of young girls—a cause close to the hearts of all Ghanaian women,” the statement continued.
The group’s support extended beyond the celebration of the historic moment. They also voiced their expectations for a brighter future under Opoku-Agyemang’s leadership.
“As Ghanaian women, we hold high expectations for this new chapter in our country’s history,” they stated. “We look forward to the implementation of policies that promote equity, inclusivity, and sustainable development for all.”
