My hair turned gray; Nana stayed bald—Mahama jabs

At his inaugural address after being sworn in as Ghana’s president, John Dramani Mahama brought laughter to the crowd with a playful comment about outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo’s trademark bald head and iconic round glasses.

The ceremony, held at the iconic Black Star Square on January 7, 2025, was a blend of solemnity and humour as Mahama reflected on his relationship with Akufo-Addo.

Paying tribute to his predecessor, Mahama spoke warmly of their shared history.

“Nana and I have walked similar paths, starting as lawmakers in Parliament,” he said, referencing their early political careers.

“Back then, we were two men debating in the chambers, unaware that fate would one day lead us both to the highest office of the land.”

With a glint of humour, Mahama added, “While my hair has gone from black to gray, Nana has gracefully kept his signature bald head, paired with those distinctive glasses we all know.”

The lighthearted remark drew cheers and laughter from the audience, adding a human touch to the ceremony.
