In a moment that highlighted Ghana’s enduring democratic values, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo warmly welcomed President-elect John Dramani Mahama to the Jubilee House on Monday, January 6.
This symbolic meeting, part of Ghana’s smooth transition process, came just a day before the highly anticipated inauguration ceremony scheduled for January 7.
As the leaders exchanged pleasantries, President Akufo-Addo set a gracious tone for the occasion. “The country awaits your leadership from tomorrow,” he said warmly, gesturing to the significance of the moment.
Turning to Mahama’s running mate, he added, “You are welcome, and Madam Vice President-elect, you are also warmly welcome.”
Mahama, poised and reflective, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to visit the Jubilee House, which he will soon call home once again. “Thank you very much. It’s a privilege to be here with you on the day before the inauguration,” he remarked.
With confidence, he assured the outgoing president of his readiness to take the reins of leadership. “We are ready with the information we’ve received to begin work immediately after the ceremony tomorrow.”
In a lighter moment during the conversation, Mahama noted the unique circumstances surrounding his return to the presidency.
“The last time I was president, I didn’t live here, and so you are the first occupant of these premises, but I know the geography of it,” he said with a smile, alluding to his familiarity with the state’s highest office, even as the Jubilee House has since become its symbolic centrepiece.
