Why I prefer Muntaka or Haruna for Speaker of parliament—Adomako Kissi

Dr. Dickson Adomako Kissi, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Anyaa Sowutuom, shared his thoughts on the speaker selection process for Ghana’s 9th Parliament in a recent interview on GHOne TV monitored by MyNewsGH.

His comments sparked interest as they came amid ongoing discussions about the role of the speaker and how the National Democratic Congress (NDC) should approach the nomination process.

Adomako Kissi expressed his support for a more inclusive approach to speaker nominations, suggesting that the NDC should have a significant say in the matter.

“Donald Trump also added his voice to the American speakership, and he won, so the idea of a president-elect making an endorsement for the position of speakership is not wrong,” he noted, referencing the U.S. political landscape where the president-elect’s input was influential in speaker nominations.

Taking this further, Dr. Kissi emphasized the importance of internal party dynamics, pointing out that MPs from the NDC should be at the forefront of the nomination process.

“If I were NDC as well, I would have nominated Haruna Iddrisu or Muntaka Mohammed or somebody else,” he added. He believes that nominating someone with experience like Iddrisu or Mohammed would have allowed for diverse opinions and encouraged debate within the party.

Dr. Kissi acknowledged the current speaker’s competency, highlighting the speaker’s contributions to the NDC.

“The speaker certainly is competent, has the experience, and he did so much for the NDC,” he said. This sentiment aligns with the party’s overall recognition of the speaker’s work, but Kissi advocates for further representation from within the party to make the process more democratic.
