Ghana’s Eighth Parliament will be dissolved today, January 6, 2025, at exactly 9 am.
This will pave the way for the 9th Parliament to be ushered in at midnight.
However, the dissolution process will take place at the final sitting of the house presided over by Speaker of Parliament Rt Hon. Alban Sumana Bagbin after the house concludes all outstanding businesses.
Ghana’s 8th Parliament has been one of the most dramatic, as both the NPP and the NDC had 137 seats each, and it took an independent candidate who decided to work with the NPP side of the house to create a majority.
After the dissolution of the 9th Parliament, the newly elected members of parliament will be sworn in at midnight to mark the commencement of the 9th Parliament.
The transition will also see the election of a Speaker of Parliament through secret balloting.
It will be remembered that on January 5, 2025, the president-elect endorsed the current speaker and mandated his parliamentarians to nominate him for the speakership position.
