Focus on national interest – Clerk tells incoming MPs

The Clerk of Parliament Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror has urged members of the incoming 9th Parliament to rise above partisan interests and focus on serving their constituents.

He delivered this message in an interview with Citi News, emphasizing the critical role Parliament plays in Ghana’s development.

“Members of Parliament-elect must apprise themselves of their roles,” he stated. “Parliament is not a place to reinforce party positions or pursue narrow partisan interests. It is a forum to deliberate and act in the interest of the entire nation.”

The 8th Parliament is set to be dissolved on January 6, paving the way for the swearing-in of the 9th Parliament on the eve of the Presidential inauguration.

Mr. Djietror used this transitional moment to remind MPs-elect of the responsibilities tied to their mandate.

“Political parties come to power based on a manifesto,” he continued. “That manifesto should contain policies aimed at advancing the nation’s interest and development—not just party agendas.”

He further stressed that MPs must never lose sight of the people they represent. “As representatives of the people, you must ensure that your work reflects their needs and aspirations,” he said. “Your responsibility is not just to your party but to the people who put their faith in you.”
