This is a historic event

Ghana is gearing up for a historic political moment as President-Elect John Dramani Mahama prepares for his inauguration on Tuesday, January 7, 2025.

This event, scheduled to take place at the iconic Black Star Square, marks not only Mahama’s return to the presidency but also the historic ascent of Ghana’s first-ever female Vice President.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Transition Team, led by Co-Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, shared vital details about the ceremony during a press briefing held on Saturday, January 4, 2025, at Black Star Square.

This event is a very historic event because not only will a former president be returning to the presidency, but we will also have the first-ever female Vice President after receiving a historic mandate from the good people of Ghana,” Ofosu stated, underscoring the monumental significance of the day.

As the nation prepares for this special occasion, one key change to the tradition has been confirmed. Traditionally, the presidential inauguration is held at Parliament House; however, with thousands expected to attend, the ceremony will be moved to the Black Star Square.

“The Parliament House will therefore be relocating its sitting from Parliament House to this square for the swearing-in,” Ofosu explained, adding that the decision was made to ensure ample space for all invited guests and citizens who wish to be part of this momentous occasion.

The transition team has also laid out the logistics for the event. Attendees are urged to be seated by 8:30 AM, ahead of the arrival of the President-Elect and Vice President-Elect.

The Speaker of Parliament and other dignitaries will escort the newly elected officials to the Swearing-In Area, marking the official start of the proceedings.

Black Star Square, a symbol of Ghana’s independence, will serve as the heart of the inauguration. The Swearing-In Area will be where the official ceremony will take place, while special areas have been designated for various groups.

The Ministries Area Stand, located on the left side of the square, will host the outgoing President, Vice President, visiting Heads of State, and other distinguished dignitaries. The right side, known as the Osu Area Stand, will be open to the public, offering a chance for citizens to witness the historic event. Additionally, for those unable to attend in person, large LED screens will be positioned around the square to allow virtual participation.

The occasion is expected to draw leaders from across the world, including representatives from international organizations such as the Commonwealth and the African Development Bank.

With heightened anticipation, the inauguration promises to be a memorable occasion, not just for the NDC but for all of Ghana, as the country prepares to celebrate a new chapter in its democratic journey.

As the day approaches, Felix Kwakye Ofosu’s message to attendees is clear: “We urge all attendees to be seated by 8:30 AM,” he emphasized, ensuring that the ceremony begins promptly and smoothly.

With security measures in place and an impressive lineup of dignitaries, the inauguration of President-Elect John Dramani Mahama and the first female Vice President is poised to go down in history as one of Ghana’s most significant political milestones.
