GNAT president urges incoming president to address Ghana’s economic woes

The General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Thomas Tanko Musah has called on President Akufo-Addo to accept the reality that the country’s economic situation has deteriorated under his leadership.

Tanko Musah expressed concerns about the country’s continued struggles, despite repeated visits to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

“Once you have come into office, people expect that their economic situation will improve,” the GNAT General Secretary remarked in an interview with 3News.

“But as we speak now, nobody will say that the current economic situation is best. We are currently at the IMF, and we’ve been there seventeen times. Each time we have gone, it’s been like we’re sitting on a good chair.”

This comment comes at a time when Ghana is experiencing significant economic hardship, including rising inflation, high unemployment rates, and a weakened currency.

Despite several rounds of negotiations with the IMF for financial assistance, the economic indicators continue to show negative trends, causing widespread frustration among citizens, including teachers and other public sector workers.

Thomas Tanko Musah further urged the President to acknowledge that the state of the economy is far from ideal. He stressed that the incoming administration must address the issues head-on.

“We are hoping that the incoming president will live up to expectations,” he said. “The overwhelming support that he got to come into government cannot be lost on him.

“Whatever he can do to make sure that the twenty-four-hour economy in the education sector, the health sector, and all sectors of the economy is implemented, we need that.”
