Fire ravages parts of Kantamanto Market

A fire outbreak has destroyed shops and Stalls at the Kantamanto Market in Accra.

It is not clear what caused the outbreak, but the Ghana Fire Service indicated in a live stream that the situation is dire.

In all, about 14 fire tenders and firefighters from Makola, Greater Accra Regional Headquarters, National Headquarters, Flagstaff House, Parliament House, Trade Fair, and Dansoman, Abelenkpe and Kasapreko, Tema Regional HQ, Madina, and Legon were dispatched to Kantamanto to help in the fight against the fire.

The Fire Service also sought the assistance of the Electricity Company of Ghana to take out the supply of electricity to help in the fight against the fire that has ravaged several buildings in the area.

ADO 1 Alex King Nartey, who was live streaming on the Ghana Fire Service Facebook page, indicated that the firefighters had spread out to prevent the fire from spreading beyond its original territory.

He, however, indicated that the situation, even though it is being fought by firefighters, continued to move from bad to worse due to the unavailability of hydrants at the market.

The massive fire has destroyed properties running into millions of cedis.

Meanwhile, some market women and men who heard of the outbreak rushed to the scene to salvage the few things they could salvage from their stalls and shops.

As of the time of filing this report, the fire continued to spread to other buildings even though the Ghana Fire Service put in more effort to ensure that the fire does not spread further.
